Colors Party - Single Ticket/VS CPU (Sky)
"your boy's going to the deep end if he hafta go to games like these" Arguably one of the weirdest fighting games I've ever laid my hands on, the original Colors Party - which later received sequels (LOST IN EATER and THE ROLL UP ~END~), created by Dream Illusory Valley/div332 - can be safely concluded as one of the most fighting games of all time. Yes, I intentionally wrote it as such - no other emotion came across other than fascination when playing this. The game system is quite interesting due to the selectable attributes (known as the "infection color system"), set to be chosen before a round in each match. There are four different options over four different attributes (those covering offensive options ("attack colors"), defensive options ("defensive colors"), movement options ("moving colors"), and character traits ("ability colors"). And the combinations and choices made from this are fun, to say the least. For offensive options, do you want EX Special moves or a powerful Super Special move that costs you all 3 bars of your meter? What about the movement options - the ability to airdash, or an additional jump? And we haven't considered the character traits, such as not getting extended hitstun from counterhits, or automatically regaining meter? Needless to say, this attribute system carries an otherwise functional and basic game. Jumps are pretty slow, making aerial options less viable (unless you chose an aerial movement option to circumvent that), but running and attacking works well. Instead of long combos associated with later games, you have a very basic cancel system (basically Light attack - Medium - Heavy - Special move - Special move of higher power(s) - Super Special move). Presentation-wise, it's oddly charming. I do think that the character sprite work is badly done, but the poorly-done faces with weird anatomy as well as the MIDI soundtrack provide a general feeling of "wow this is... interesting" throughout the game. Although I'm willing to give div332 some slack because of the hobby-like nature of Doujin work, I'm glad he improved over the years. Overall, this game's weird. I personally think that this isn't the best Doujin fighting game to get invested in, but it's nice to take a look at and marvel at how odd this game is. This game has two different story modes - one covering the initial story (titled "Colors Party", upper option) and another covering a more character-specific story ("Stars' Holiday Edition", bottom option). The other option shown initially (middle option) is a lower-difficulty option with fewer opponents and barely any story. The unique two are covered in the course of this video. 0:00 "Colors Party" The story behind this involves a fighting entertainment group known as the "Colors" - I think that the characters here are personifications of differing colors? There happens to be a big show involving this family-friendly slugfest, in which all of the playable characters are preparing for. This is the standard arcade mode experience. You face off against nine different opponents, although you can face another bonus boss (bringing that total to ten) under meeting specific circumstances. I honestly don't know what kind exactly, but it's probably reaching a certain number of points, which could be easily circumvented by bringing out them multi-hit supers. Achieve that, and Gold - the aforementioned bonus boss - will shove gold coins to your mouth if you aren't carefully blocking. He falls apart like many CPU opponents here if you rush him down though. 18:55 "Stars' Holiday Edition" After the great success of the performance from the "Colors Party" route, all of the playable characters basically have free time - the first holiday of some sort they had in a long time too. At the same time, though, another performance involving idol entertainers has recently ended, and one particular idol, Nikis-Sacred (one who is acquainted with most of the Colors) is looking for a "new element" (read: likely fighting an opponent, this world is pretty weird lol) for her live performance later. Sky (our character) was just messing around and playing in the park in this story. After playing with like five folks, one of them (Lue) invites Sky to Nikis-Sacred's concert, where she asks for an on-stage duel. This is the character-specific story experience. The amount of CPUs fought here is smaller (around six), however it makes up for it with increased difficulty and a proper story with cutscenes. Nikis, the final boss of this route, is fairly difficult to deal with here, mostly because of her full-screen attack spam keeping you away and punishing your poorly-timed rolls, although the CPU behind this boss-only character does not recover in the air as often, further making rushing her down easier. 34:38 End screen I really need to cut down on my descriptions, but half the time there is lots to be said about games like this orz https://www.freem.ne.jp/win/game/1051
