Dogs with Jobs - Season 4, Episode 9: Kaiser, Tikva, Macho

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police force requires top-notch working dogs. Kaiser is nearing the end of a rigorous three-month training program with his handler Constable Chris Brinnen. RCMP dogs must excel at obedience, tracking, retrieving, criminal apprehension, searches and narcotic and bomb detection. Because Canada is a huge country and the RCMP are often stationed in remote areas, Kaiser has to be multi-skilled. He may be the only police dog for 2500 square miles. RCMP dogs have to be versatile geniuses, able to succeed in all areas. Will Kaiser pass his final exam? Tikva, a two-year-old Keeshond, is a member of the Hope Crisis Response Team. She lives in Oregon, but was called to New York last fall to work as a Red Cross dog at the World Trade Center disaster. Tikva’s owner, Cindy Ehlers, is an animal behaviorist. She founded the Oregon based Hope Crisis Response Team, a volunteer organization that provides animal assisted emotional support to people in crisis or disaster situations. Cindy and Tikva were one of the four teams called to ground zero by the Red Cross to provide emotional support for families of the missing. Tikva can tell who needs her help. She picks up body language clues and approaches people who exhibit distress or withdrawn behavior. Four-year-old Macho is Margrit Bigler-Wyss’s constant companion at her dairy farm. Macho and his partner Nasha love their job. Bernese mountain dogs have been pulling milk carts to the local dairy since the 19th century. But the use of dogs to pull carts has been phased out due to more efficient methods such as tractors, and increased traffic on the roads. Macho may be the last of a dying breed.
