A Debt That Changes Men | Devotional | Proverbs 22:7
The rich rules over the poor, and the borrower is the slave of the lender. — Proverbs 22:7 When we borrow money, we are burdened with an obligation. And this obligation has weight. The more we borrow, the greater the weight. But the weight of this is dependent on the terms of the contract and the character of the lender. But the reason we borrow is that we want something that we cannot afford at present. So in the act of borrowing, we will get something we want. But we also get something we don't want. A new title. We become a slave. And this is not a title of notoriety like Doctor, Master, Entrepreneur, or Executive. We become a slave to someone because we have to have it now. But not all debt is bad. There is a debt that has a positive effect. It's a debt of love. Romans 13:8 reads, "Owe no one anything, except to love each other, for the one who loves another has fulfilled the law." Love is a commodity we are called to exchange freely. Love has value and gains even more value every time we trade it. As a lender, we can extend love to others in endless amounts. As borrowers, we should enjoy the love given and yet should feel an obligation to repay the debt to others. But the commodity of love does not originate with a loan from man. It originates with God, for "God is love." (1 John 4:16) So today, avoid debt. But not the debt of love. Live life knowing that you have a debt to pay. A debt of love that you can never repay. It was paid for you by God's Son, who died for you. So extend love generously. "But God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us." — Romans 5:8 ASK THIS: Who is someone you need to extend love to today? DO THIS: Do it right now, not later, now! PRAY THIS: Father, thank you for loving me, a sinner. May your love be my love, and help me stop withholding it. Help me to extend it generously as you did for me. PLAY THIS: Reckless Love.
