Tom's constant cleverness, superstition, trickery, and daring make him a handful to raise, and his Aunt Polly declares that she has "never seen the beat of that boy!" Tom is essentially good-hearted, however, but when he is witness to a horrible crime, his courage and integrity are tested beyond anything he ever expected. Mark Twain, the author of The Adventures of Tom Sawyer has declared that most of the adventures in this story really happened. One or two were his own experiences. The others were experiences of boys in his school. Huck Finn really lived. Tom Sawyer is made of three real boys. This story is for boys and girls, but the author hopes that men and women also will read it. He hopes that it will help them to remember pleasantly the days when they were boys and girls, and how they felt and thought and talked, what they believed, and what strange things they sometimes did.
