Sime Sample Lectures & Should You Major in Supply Chain Management? https://wmich.edu/supplychain/academics/lectures E-Mail: [email protected] "Better, faster, cheaper"; www.wmich.edu/supplychain "WMU Integrated Supply Management (ISM)...Nation's best undergraduate SCM program (Gartner 2014); 2nd in SCM technology (SoftwareAdvice 2015); 2nd in top global SCM talent (SCM World 2017) Dear Students: I met with several managers at last year's career fair and I made the following observations. 1. Global skills are critical. For example, have you traveled and/or studied abroad? Do you speak a foreign language? Spring break in Mexico does not count. Do you have a passport or are you dumping that burden on a future employer? Paperwork for international students can be cumbersome, but it is worthwhile if the American pool is thin on global skills. Do you know how to schedule a flight? If your flight gets cancelled, do you know how to reschedule? Do you know which countries are in the European Union but not in the European Monetary Union? Do you know what the name of China's currency is? Stuff like that really resonates with managers. 2. Good employers with good jobs will make you take a drug test. They use a combination of urine and hair samples. Expect it for a full-time position, and do not be surprised for an internship. Your brain on drugs = unemployed. Once we had three students fail their drug test with the same company in the same month. Uggghhhhh. 3. Great employers with great jobs want a 3.0 GPA and above. There are jobs for students with under a 3.0 but the salary difference appears to be $10,000 (20%). You can add another $5,000-$10,000 in benefits lost also. It could take 3 promotions and 10 years to make up for that lost ground. 4. Get to know your major advisors/professors. I had numerous recruiters ask me about students and I did not know who they were. Approach your professors before you take a class with them. Also, you should meet with your full-time ISM academic advisor for 15-30 minutes every semester. Her name is Alyshia Norris. [email protected] Alyshia (Norris) Garrett ISM Program Manager Office of Academic Advising and Admissions Haworth College of Business Western Michigan University (269) 387-5856 5. You have to have some work experience related to your major and the job you want. 6. They expect you to be in student organizations related to your major (e.g., APICS/ASCM, CSCMP, ISM, etc.). 7. You have to place your resume on Handshake. Several managers will not find you if you do not have your resume on Handshake. Or, they might find you but their HR person cannot approve an interview because they have a policy which requires them using career services. HR uses it as confirmation that you are a legitimate student. Hello All, Please see the first email blast to our supply chain students from the new and improved BroncoJOBS powered through Handshake.
