Vladimir Yelin Mermaid in Love Chapter 4. The First Date It was MORN-ing — EAR-ly, the SKY turning RED, SUN-light spilled SOFT on the VAL-ley beLOW. Where MOUN-tains and COAST-line SI-lent-ly MET, The WHOLE scene SHIM-mered in AM-ber GLOW. There on the SHORE the PAINT-er stood STILL, His THOUGHTS aDRIFT: “Will she COME toDAY?” The FOAM of the TIDE, like a WHIS-pered SPELL, MUR-mured, “She’s NEAR… she’s on her WAY.” He PACKED his FINS and his O-cean GEAR, And WAN-dered down past the CAN-yon’s BEND. The HUSH of the SURF was PULL-ing him NEAR — Where LAND and WA-ter reFUSE to `BLEND. A WAVE rolled OUT, then CURLED back IN, Not WIND-blown, NO — too SMOOTH, too DEEP. He FELT it RISE from someWHERE withIN: “It’s HER,” he WHIS-pered, soul half a`SLEEP. Her HEAD apPEARED in the SUN-lit SPRAY, DRIFT-ing SLOW where the SHAL-lows GLEAMED. He DOVE right IN withOUT deLAY, ToWARD the WORLD he THOUGHT he’d DREAMED. ToGETH-er they SANK, no SOUND, no STIR, Down IN-to SI-lence, lit from aBOVE. PAINT-er and MER-maid, BOUND by BLUR — By TIDE, by TWILIGHT, DOL-phin `LOVE. And UN-der the SEA he SAW her aNEW — The SEA Queen’s GRACE, in MO-tion, BRIGHT. Her FORM diVINE, her PRES-ence TRUE, A WILD, unEARTH-ly FLASH of LIGHT. Queen I-sis DANCED in a SHELL-toned HUE, In WA-ters CLEAR and CALI-for-nia COOL. He FOLL-owed her JOY-ful-ly, SWIMM-ing THROUGH A DREAM-scape CARVED from NEP-tune’s RULE. She KISSED aWAY his HU-man ACHE, Her LIPS brushed HIS and BROKE the SPELL. A WARMTH rolled THROUGH, a TIDE to SHAKE The STRINGS he NEVER KNEW so WELL. She BECK-oned him DEE-per with QUI-et SIGNS, And he, BOLD now, MET her STARE. “Can I still BREATHE down where the LIGHT deCLINES?” He ASKED her with a HINT of `DARE. “You’ll BREATHE through ME — just HOLD me TIGHT, Let your LIPS rest CLOSE to MINE. ” The THOUGHT arRIVED like SUD-den LIGHT — And GAVE him COUR-age down the LINE. In that LONG KISS, they DRIFT-ed SLOW, DeSCEND-ing through a SEA so WIDE. A RUSH of FEEL-ing beGAN to GROW, And DRY land VAN-ished from his MIND. She CLUNG to him with O-cean FIRE, Their EN-er-gies TAN-gled and SURGED as ONE. No EARTH-ly TOUCH could MATCH desire Born beNEATH that MORN-ing SUN. Like CHIL-dren they PLAYED in the COR-al’s DEEP, In END-less SPACE where SI-lence SINGS. They SPUN, emBRACED, and BREATHED in PEACE — Still WRAPPED in KISS-es, SOFT as WINGS. This was a DAY he’d NE-ver forGET, The MO-ment when HEARTS spoke FREE. The AR-tist and MER-maid — forE-ver SET — In LOVE, the SOUL finds AR-tisTRY. Then CAME a THOUGHT: “Should I HEAD aSHORE?” And DOL-phins LEAPT with a PLAY-ful SHOUT. They SQUEAKED and SPUN, then DANCED some MORE — Her SEA-born KIN, no ROOM for DOUBT. The QUEEN gave OR-ders: “Bring him IN — But GEN-tly NOW, he’s NOT like US. ” The PAINT-er BLINKED, surPRISED aGAIN: “Wait… how can THOUGHTS just TRAV-el THUS?”
