The Program aids students and organizations with projects in both academic and public policy arenas to educate and motivate those who are interested in transportation technology and planning. Virtual presentations will be offered on Wednesday, September 21 at 12:00 p.m. by four exceptional students who served as NYMTC’s 2021-2022 September 11th Memorial Scholars: Cristina Mejia Cancelado is pursuing a Master of Urban Planning at the NYU Wagner School of Public Service and is a lawyer from Universidad de los Andes in Bogota, Colombia. While at NYCDOT she evaluated their current Coordinated Street Furniture Franchise program which installs, maintains, and operates street furniture structures throughout New York City and aims to improve the city’s streetscape. She also researched similar programs at other agencies, and Cristina’s efforts are informing the development of a new contract that will enhance the next iteration of this program. Fabian Barch is a Ph.D. candidate in Sociology of Education at New York University. His doctoral research explores the relationship between students’ experiences with housing instability and their academic performance, centering research around questions of equity and public goods access. While at the NYCDOT he focused on building Community Profiles as a tool to help understand the neighborhoods surrounding DOT project areas, their needs, and priorities. Julia Amaral is a Ph.D. student in Transportation Engineering at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. Her main research interests are urban freight and passenger transportation, with a focus on enhancing transportation efficiency in cities, improving livability, and reducing environmental impacts. While at NYMTC, she evaluated new methods to update and enhance existing NYMTC socioeconomic and demographic modeling forecasts. Tao Liang is currently pursuing a Master of Transportation Planning and Engineering degree at New York University, researching urban data analysis, and using data-augmented approaches to identify city problems and optimize design solutions. While at NYCDOT, Tao was responsible for researching and completing the “Infrastructure is Public Space: Building Healthy, Resilient and Sustainable Corridors” project, and assisted in formulating the Healthy Corridor Index.
