Monoclonal antibody therapy for COVID19 - Regeneron and Eli Lilly (#36)

Video number 36 of the channel, today talking about monoclonal antibodies. It’s a topic I’ve been meaning to talk about for a while, but with news of Regeneron starting clinical trials in the UK through the University of Oxford RECOVERY trials and Eli Lilly today announcing some clinical data, I thought today was the day. I go into a discussion of what monoclonal antibodies are, talk about how Regeneron produced REGN-COV2 monoclonal antibody therapy and then discuss the work from Eli Lilly. Papers: Regeneron work: https://science.sciencemag.org/content/369/6506/1010 Regeneron again: https://science.sciencemag.org/content/369/6506/1014 Eli Lilly press release: https://investor.lilly.com/news-releases/news-release-details/lilly-announces-proof-concept-data-neutralizing-antibody-ly Timestamps: 0:01:40 - End of the intro talking about today’s topic and into discussion of monoclonal antibodies and what they are 0:03:30 - How monoclonal antibodies are produced in the lab for therapy 0:04:51 - Talking about the Regeneron work to find antibodies that bind spike and find a good combination of two (the first paper linked above) 0:08:49 - Talking about the second study linked above to look for escape mutants against the antibodies and finding that the combination is very effective at blocking that 0:12:33 - Eli Lilly’s press released data 0:15:47 - Summary on monoclonals and a discussion on some of the limitations of this therapy Please keep subscribing for updates of new videos, or follow me on Twitter - @StuartMWeston And importantly through all this, stay safe, wash you hands, wear a mask, keep calm and carry on.
