YIL & MIL erstwhile OFB gets order of 5.56×45mm & 40mm ammo for L-70 guns for a NATO country

Massive Order of 5.56×45mm from NATO country The 5.56×45mm NATO ammunition is a rimless bottlenecked intermediate cartridge family developed in the late 1970s in Belgium by FN Herstal. Who knows better about this round than an Indian as it is chambered in INSAS Rifle. While Indian Army is phasing out 5.56mm bullets and the indigenous INSAS with Russian AK-203, the Yantra India Limited (YIL), and Munitions India Limited (MIL) part of erstwhile OFB has won a massive order for the supply of 5.56X45mm bullets from a NATO country. The order quantity is nearly three times the quantity of 5.56mm rounds Indian army purchases in a year. 40mm anti-aircraft ammunition for L-70 guns The defence public sector undertakings (DPSUs) have got another major export order to make components for anti-aircraft ammunition from a European country. The second order at YIL is for components of 40mm anti-aircraft ammunition fired from the L-70 guns. The order is expected to compensate for the dwindling orders from the Indian Army. The Bofors 40 mm Automatic Gun L/70 is a multi-purpose autocannon developed by the Swedish arms manufacturer erstwhile AB Bofors and now BAE Systems. It is used as a dedicated anti-aircraft weapon but have been redeveloped into a dedicated multi-purpose weapon capable of firing both sabot projectiles and programmable ammunition. Indian Army has also heavily upgraded them and converted some of them with latest sensors into a drone killer. YIL & MIL Both the orders will be implemented by Yantra India Limited (YIL), and Munitions India Limited (MIL), which are headquartered at Nagpur and Pune respectively. YIL will make the hardware with ammunition filling to be done by MIL. After corporatization, the erstwhile Ordnance Factory Board has been converted into seven defence PSUs. Yantra primarily manufactures specialised components and equipment required for the manufacture of Small arms, explosives and artillery. Munitions India primarily manufactures ammunition, explosives, rockets and bombs for the use of the Indian Armed Forces, foreign militaries and domestic civilian use. The factories have capacity to make more 300 million rounds a year. The current order is expected to help the companies utilize the machinery close to their full capacity.
