UPDATING THE ARCHIVES: WHEN DOCUMENTARY MAKES USE OF ARCHIVAL IMAGES (in English) Reminders from the past, archival images bear a visual witness of what has once existed. Presenting the “real”, they are potentially precious for documentary creation. From a practical point of view, the images, whether preserved in personal or institutional archives, suffer degradations throughout the years and may end up in oblivion. Therefore, they need to be restored and re-contextualized for use in contemporary documentary production. Ethical questions are raised on the use of archival images, as well as their rights clearing status. This roundtable aims to shed light on how the practical and aesthetical aspects intertwine in a documentary film production process.
