Steven Donziger 993 days of detention after a $9 billion judgement against CHEVRON!
For those who don't know him, you must learn about the journey of Steven and his battle against Chevron. After helping Indigenous peoples in the Amazon win a $9.5 billion pollution judgment against Chevron, the company and its law firm Gibson Dunn had him prosecuted privately on a contempt charge in the nation's first corporate prosecution. The regular federal prosecutor refused the case so the judge appointed a Chevron lawyer to detain him. Donziger then became the first lawyer in US history jailed for a contempt charge; he also became the first lawyer in US history held pre-trial for a misdemeanor. He ended up serving 993 days of detention a charge where the maximum previous sentence was 90 days. His case is pure political retaliation by Chevron and two federal judges in New York, Lewis Kaplan and Loretta Preska. Both have financial ties to Chevron. I had the pleasure of connecting with Steven here in LA and was able to talk about his continued battle and advocacy for the people in Ecuador.
