Revelation 18 Flee Babylon
REVELATION 18 Revelation 18:4 talks about “Babylon” and how God’s people must leave Babylon: “I heard another voice from heaven, saying: Come out of her My people, lest you take part in her sins, and partake of her plagues”. This is quoting from the Old Testament, when Judah were in captivity in Babylon. They were then told to leave Babylon. A king called Cyrus arose, who encouraged the Jews to leave Babylon and return to Judah. He gave them all the resources they needed to rebuild Jerusalem and the temple; He urged them to leave Babylon and reestablish God’s Kingdom in the land of Judah. But most of them refused. They preferred to remain in Babylon, enjoying the soft life. They liked to talk about how they were Jews; they retained Jewish culture. But they didn’t really want to see the restoration of God’s Kingdom. Because by that time, the Jews were popular there. That’s why the ending of the book of Esther is rather sad- the Jews were wealthy and popular. But God urged them to leave Babylon. If they didn’t, then they would be destroyed and would be corrupted by her. All these things are now applied to us. We too are in Babylon. And we have been asked to leave this world, and work for the things of God’s Kingdom. But we are tempted to have just an external culture of being Christian, rather than wanting to leave this world and give ourselves completely to the things of God’s Kingdom. The Jewish exiles wasted so much potential. The Old Testament prophets had spoken so much of the wonderful Kingdom they could have reestablished. But most of them preferred the soft life in Babylon, and to just have an external culture of being God’s people. The few who did return were only interested in their own personal benefit. Today likewise, God is urging people to leave Babylon. He has made everything possible for us to be in His Kingdom. But so many people don’t respond, because they see only their immediate wellbeing and situation. What it is to be a Christian is to see that there is another reality; the reality of the things of God’s Kingdom.
