"Scaramouche Suite: Modéré" (Darius Milhaud) by Ashleigh Rasenberger - MacG Music Spotlight
This week we welcome Year 11 Music student Ashleigh into the MacG Music Spotlight featuring her assessed performance of “Scaramouche Suite: Modéré” by Darius Milhaud! Ashleigh has a strong involvement in our Instrumental and Vocal Music Program as a saxophonist and Big Band and Wind Symphony, a vocalist in Show Choir and Vocal Harmony, the leader of Wind Symphony, and in addition is a talented clarinettist and pianist. Darius Milhaud’s "Scaramouche Suite: Modéré" was originally composed and premiered in 1937 as a piano duo, performed by two of his friends; Marcelle Meyer and Ida Jankelevitch. Being described as a driving force in French Music, Milhaud based the suite on both incidental music written for a French Play and a comical Italian theatre character. A Scaramouche or Scaramuccia was a boastful stock clown in a type of Italian theatre called commedia dell’arte. This comical character style correlates with the infectious rhythms and simple/varied melodies through each movement. The piece was regarded at the time as one of the cornerstones of piano duo repertoire and became one of Milhaud’s most popular works. In 1939, Milhaud rearranged the piece for saxophone and orchestra and later for clarinet and orchestra. We hope you enjoy Ashleigh’s performance! Tune in next Term for another instalment of the MacG Music Spotlight! #MacG #MusicSpotlight #thebestwecanbe
