NieR: Automata | chil[D]hood’s end (Ending “D”)
With the last machine defeated, 9S and A2 are left alone at the top of the Tower. A2 informs 9S that the Tower is a giant canon aimed at the lunar server on the moon which holds the last traces of humanity. She tells him that if they don’t do anything, everything will be lost. 9S, who is far too unstable to think logically simply laughs. He questions what the point of protecting the server would be as he claims the world is meaningless. A2 then reveals 2B’s real designation is actually 2E. Because of the 9S model’s high curiosity and intelligence, they are bound to find out the truth about humanity over and over again. Which is why the 2E model was created as a means to kill the 9S model whenever they found out the truth. 2E of course had no knowledge of this and acted only on her programmed parameters to be paired up with 9S and to kill him whenever he discovered the truth. After killing him, his memories would be wiped clean and his consciousness would be transferred to a new body, effectively resetting him. It’s implied that 2E has actually killed him multiple times before. This explains why 2B remorsefully said, “It always ends like this” when she fatally choked 9S during Ending "A". An infected 9S challenges A2 to a duel to death, despite Pod 153 insisting that the two of them fighting at this point is irrational. 9S orders Pod 153 to halt all logical thought and speech until they can confirm the death of either himself or A2. Not able to plead peace with 9S who is deafened by hatred, A2 simply nods her head to grant him his wish. Thus begins the final battle between the last of YoRHa. At this point the route splits into two different endings depending on which character you choose to play during the final battle. If you choose 9S, you will receive ending “D”: In ending “D”, 9S is able to stun-lock A2 and come charging at her with his sword. They exchange a few blocked attacks until A2 gains the upper hand as 9S stumbles to the ground. Before she can strike a final blow, A2 is suddenly paralyzed as she hears the voice of 2B telling her to take care of 9S. In her frozen daze, 9S stabs her with his sword. Run through, A2 impales 9S with her sword as she falls to the ground. This leaves them both lying in pools of their own blood, lifeless at the top of the tower. During 9S’ final moments, the Red Girls inform him that they have decided to change the function of the Tower. Instead of launching a missile strike at the lunar server, they are launching an ark containing the spirit of the machines as well as a peaceful Adam and Eve to another world. Here, the player gets to choose whether or not to let 9S go along with them on the ark or leave him behind to perish. In the distance, the Resistance Camp observes the destruction of the Tower. A newly reset Pascal is also seen watching the Tower come crumbling down. As the Tower comes crashing down, the sadness of this scene is amplified as we see the bodies of Devola and Popola lying dead at the foot of the structure. As they died, the twins held each other in an embrace for one last time. Platform: PlayStation 4 All © copyrights belong to their respective owners, Square Enix Co., Ltd. & PlatinumGames Inc.
