William Burchell’s Return Journey (1812-1815)
The naturalist William John Burchell (1781–1863) never published an account of his three-year return journey (1812–1815) from the Kalahari to Cape Town via the Great Fish River Mouth. Only a one journal covering a single month of travel has survived. Sifting through widely dispersed primary sources, Roger Stewart and Marion Whitehead have meticulously reconstructed and illustrated the most complete account possible of Burchell’s three lost years.
