Apple MacBook Pro trackpad acting strange

I'm dragging my finger slowly/steadily straight down the trackpad but the cursor is jumping, skipping, and sticking. This behavior doesn't happen 100% of the time. It happens with and without the power adapter and/or display adapter plugged in. It doesn't seem to be caused by any software/settings.
