Do Justice, Love Kindness, and Walk Humbly with Your God (Micah 6:8) 1/29/2023
This single verse from the prophet Micah contains the "Law" and the "Gospel." Let's switch the order of it, however, by starting with walking humbly with God, for does't everything begin with that? Only then can we truly do justice. Today Micah and Jesus in his Sermon on the Mount also want us to go even further than justice. They challenge us to love not "kindness" exactly but "hesed," which in Hebrew is a far greater word than "kindness." "Hesed" literally means "womb love," the love our Mother/Father God has for you...and for me. "Hesed" also means "mercy," or "compassion." We are to go even further than justice and treat others with Hesed, as God has loved us with Hesed, womb love, mercy, compassion.
