Beratung (Advice) 6 Songs, Opus 67 (1919) (No.5) Richard Strauss
The fifth of the six Opus 67 songs, written by Richard Strauss in 1919. Based on a poem by Goethe from his collection West–östlicher Divan, written in 1819 (inspired by the Persian Poet Hafez). These 6 songs were written to satisfy Strauss legal obligation to Bote and Bock, who had rejected the 12 Opus 66 songs (Kramerspiegel) as unsuitable. The 6 songs are divided into two sets of 3. The first three are the "Songs of Ophelia", settings of Shakespeare (Hamlet); the second 3 from the same book (Buch de Unmuts - Book of ill humor) of Goethe's West-East Divan. performed by MARTIN MITTERRUTZNER (tenor) and Wolfram Rieger (Piano) Richard Strauss Complete works for voice and piano. Two Pianists Records. Nun, so fördert eure Sachen! Have I ever advised you How to wage your battles? Did I scold you after your deeds When you wanted to make peace? Thus have I also seen the fisherman Peacefully casting his nets, Never needed to tell the skilled carpenter How to use his protractor. But you think you know better The things I know – having pondered What nature, eager on my behalf, Has already made my own. Do you feel the same strength? Well then, look after yourself! But if you look on my works, Learn first: that’s the way he wanted it.
