Julia Gillard: Not now, not ever (misogyny speech) (Stalin's Piano excerpt)
Sonya Lifschitz performs Robert Davidson's composition based on the spoken intonation of Prime Minister Julia Gillard's famous misogyny speech, made in Australian Parliament 10 October 2012. The Prime Minister had endured sustained attacks as a female politician and in this speech . concentrates her response into one focused articulation. Her voice was often criticised for stridency and a lack of beauty, so this composition focuses on its musical qualities as a different perspective. The piano frames her speech as music, with the intention of giving prominence to the woman behind the political facade, on the emotions behind the words. This work was originally commissioned by The Australian Voices as a choral composition, and is here rescored for solo piano as part of the collection of voice portraits Stalin's Piano.
