Roundhouse Kicks 101 Kickboxing

Mike Andreula here, and we're going to do a continuation on the roundhouse segment because of all the input and e-mails we received on it. We're going to talk about the lead leg roundhouse, which is a sticking point for a lot of people. Do you switch and put the leg in the rear, or do you throw it from the lead? My answer to that is you do both. When you're lined up in front of your bag if you want to hit it with a lighter kick or you want to just snap into it, you're going to throw a lead leg roundhouse. The protocol to follow is step across with your rear foot, throw the kick. This is the key. One, two, back into your stance. So let's do it again. Step across, throw the kick. One, two, back in the stance. You don't want to do this, just drop that foot down. You want to snap it, one, two. You've got your lead leg roundhouse. You're stepping the right foot out from the outside. If you know me at all, I tell you to throw your kicks in minimal steps. So you want to step, strike. One, two. You can still throw it semi-hard. Step, one, two. One more time. Step, one, two. That initial step is giving you all the torque. If you decide you want to throw the lead from the rear, not a problem at all. I would say throw a combination first. Explode into the switch. Snap it. Explode into it. You can't do a lazy switch at all. It's got to be very explosive. Explode into it. One, two. Again, explode. One, two. Lead leg roundhouse, switches into the rear, stepping across, one, two. A lot of people will get caught up though. After the switch your foot remains straight and you did not twist and you did not step out, or there's not even a pivot to relieve all of that tension and torque on the knee. When you switch, you should be thinking about the angles you need to do. When you switch your lead foot is already being pointed off to the side, within the switch. Get that foot off to the side immediately. If it's straight, you're going to have a lot more difficulty. You're going to have to pivot a lot more. Switch. Keep the questions coming mike@clubkogyms. While the roundhouse kick is common in most forms of martial arts, the Muay Thai version is considered to be the most powerful and can often take out an opponent in a single blow. A few simple tips can help you perfect your Muay Thai boxing roundhouse kick. 1. Begin in the basic Muay Thai boxing stance by placing your legs about shoulder width apart with your dominant leg behind you. Your weight should be shifted onto your front foot and your hands should be lifted to your chest. 2. Push off of your back foot slightly as you begin the roundhouse kick. This will help give you momentum in the kick. As you push, lift onto the ball of your non-dominant foot and rotate slightly to the side. The twisting motion is extremely important in the Muay Thai boxing roundhouse kick, as it will add force to your blow. 3. Swing your dominant foot forward hard and fast. The Muay Thai roundhouse kick is different from other forms of martial arts in that you do not bend your knee. Instead, the swing is from the hip. 4. Flex the foot of your kicking leg to add force to the kick and protect your bones and muscles. Again, the Muay Thai roundhouse kick is different from other forms in that you should strike with your shin and not with your foot. This increases the impact and makes the kick far more powerful. 5. Keep your arm up at your chest for the entire kick. It is easy to lose your balance during the roundhouse kick, therefore many boxers drop their outside arm for balance. However, this opens you up for an attack. Practice the roundhouse kick slowly to perfect each step, only adding speed and force when you have mastered the move. How To Crush It On A Roundhouse part 2 Create tension on your hips by using a combination of turning your upperbody and stepping out at an angle with your supporting leg and when the tension is max, release it swinging your leg horizontally through the target. www.ckotrainer.com
