2016 - 2017 Macbook Pro 13 and 15" FlexGate (loss of backlight upon opening)
2016 - 2017 Macbook Pros in particular, are very prone to a problem with the screen backlight cable breaking. This allows the computer to be on and be displaying an image, but you cannot see anything because the backlight is not on. You need backlight as well as an image to be able to see what is displayed on the screen. This is colloquially known as FlexGate and while some 2016 models are covered by an extended replacement program by Apple, no 2017 models are !!! This is despite using exactly the same screen. A new short section of cable can be soldered to the existing flex cable back before the crack, fully reinstating the backlight. It's either that or a new or good second hand screen ($400- 700) Aftermarket Chinese screens do work but the image quality is significantly inferior to the genuine Apple screen. This repair can be done at 1/2 -1/3 of a full screen replacement so please ask about your particular situation. As you can see in the video, the backlight works if you slowly open the screen, but once you reach around 45° open it goes out. Image will still be there but no backlight means that you cannot see it.
