Mac Poepoe is a lawaiʻa, a fisherman, a lifetime Hawaiian homesteader, and a community leader on Molokaʻi. He dedicates his life to sharing his knowledge of traditional resource management to ensure that our ocean will be momona, and abundant for generations to come. “Ma ka hana ka ʻike.” Through doing, one learns.” Uncle Mac’s expertise and knowledge can be attributed to his upbringing in a Hawaiian family that has been fishing and maintaining the sustainability of these waters for generations. Uncle Mac is a skilled lawaiʻa who approaches his practice with passion and care. Poepoe has developed resource materials, programs, and curriculum that have set the standard for small-scale conservation management today in many ways. As an exemplary model of pono practices, Uncle Mac has been and will continue to be vital to the sustainability of Molokaʻi. The Na Hulu Kūpuna Project seeks to Hoʻohanohano (uplift and honor) our island kūpuna so these moʻolelo—stories, knowledge, and values are passed on and perpetuated by the generations to come so they too can live the Hawaiian traditions.
