The song was originally written by Ismail Marzuki in 1950 then subsequently covered by many musicians. Some said that this is the first song written about Idul Fitri in Indonesia's popular culture. Marzuki put some social commentaries in the original lyrics where he touched the topic of corruption, gambling, domestic violence, and gap between middle and low class group. Many covers don't use those lyrics so that the song can be enjoyed simply to celebrate Idul Fitri. The song was very popular that many believed it was the one that coined the phrase "Minal Aidin Wal Faidzin, Mohon Maaf Lahir dan Batin“ and such that many thought "Mohon Maaf Lahir dan Batin" was the literal translation of "Minal Aidin Wal Faidzin" which is not.
