There are a lot of things to explore in Morro Bay but the first thing on our agenda was the Morro Bay Skateboard museum. Home the worlds second largest skateboard. This is a great place to see even if you don’t know much about skateboarding. They have over 300 skateboards from all eras from the 1920’s to present day with rotating exhibits from private collections. We even got a change to talk to the museum curator Jack Smith. From 1976 to 2013 he has skateboarded across the country a total of 4 times. In 2016 he attempted to be the first person to ride an electric skateboard across the country but ended early in Boise, Idaho for safety reasons. The trip still raised about $3,000 for a nonprofit called Board Rescue that provides skateboards to kids. After the museum we decided to see what Morro Bay is most famous for: the California State Historic Landmark Morro Rock. You can drive to the base of Morro Rock by way of Embarcadero Road heading north but please, no climbing. Morro Rock was an important navigational aid for mariners for over 300 years because at 576 feet tall it’s most distinctive and recognizable landmark for miles. Morro Rock was formed about 23 million years ago from the plug of a long-extinct volcano and it is part of a chain of nine volcanic peaks that extend from San Luis Obispo to Morro Bay known as the Nine Sisters.
