Although the Asian and African elephants belong to the same species, they have different physical characteristics that make them remarkably different from one another. 00:08 Asian Elephant vs African Elephant The scientific name of Asian Elephant is Elephas Maximus and African Elephant is Loxodonta Africana. Asian Elephants are distributed widely throughout the Indian Subcontinent, Southeast Asia and Asian Islands. African Elephants are found in the East, Central, Southern Africa, including the Savannas and in the African Deserts. Both Asian and African Elephants are endangered species. Height – Asian Elephants height can be approximately 10 feet while the African Elephants are 13 feet tall. Female elephants are comparatively shorter than the males. Weight – 1 African Elephant’s weight is equal to that of 2 Asian Elephants. Male African Elephants weigh 4000 to 8000 Kg whereas the Asian Male Elephants weigh 2000 to 5500 Kg. Body Length – The body length of a male African Elephant is 24 feet and the body length of a male Asian elephant is 21 feet. The male and female Asian Elephants have similar body lengths. Skin – Asian elephant’s body has a bumpy Skin, but the skin close to their ears, Lips, Eyelids & Genitals are smooth. Their skin is smoother compared to African Elephants. The African Elephants have rough Greyish Folded Skin but often appear brown because of their habit of regularly taking mud baths. Both species have a thick skin which protects them from bites, bumps, & adverse weather. Head – Asian Elephant has a Twin-domed head with an indent running up the center of their head. African Elephant has a fuller, rounded single dome shape head. Ear – Ear of Asian Elephant is almost semi-circular in shape and smaller than their head. African Elephants ears are almost shaped like the African continent and bigger than their head. Back – Asian Elephants have a convex shaped back, whereas the African elephants have a concave or level back. Tusks – In the Asian Elephants tusks are present only males, but in case of African Elephants both male and female have tusks. Tusk Size – The Asian elephants tusks are 4 to 6 feet in length and can weigh 30 to 40 kilograms. The African elephants tusks are 8 to 10 feet in length and can weigh 70 to 100 kilograms. Lower Lips – Asian Elephants have a Long and tapered lower lips, In case of African Elephants the Lower lips are short and round. Teeth – Asian Elephants have a compressed diamond-shaped tooth profile. African Elephants Teeth are comparatively ‘Loxodont’ or Sloping. Ribs – Asian Elephants have a 20 pairs of ribs, African Elephants have 21 pairs of ribs. Trunk – The trunk length of Asian Elephant is 6 feet, they weigh 140 kg and has a capacity to store 5 to 10 litres of water. African Elephants trunk is 6 to 7 feet, weighs 150 to 200 kg and has a capacity to store 8 to 12 litres of water. Trunk Tip – The Trunk tip of Asian Elephant has only one pointed fingertip. In case of African Elephant their Trunk tip has two pointed finger tips giving them a better control in plucking tree leaves. Nails – Asian Elephants Fore feet has 5 Nails and their Hind feet has 4 to 5 Nails. African Elephants Fore feet has 5 Nails and Hind feet has 3 Nails. Tail – The tail of Asian Elephant and African Elephant are almost similar in length. Preferred Diet – Asian Elephants prefer to feed on grasses, bamboo and Palm leaves. They feed 150 kg/day and drink 225 litres of water/day. African Elephants prefer to Strip, push down trees, feed on tree leaves, and may go for several days without drinking water in arid areas. They feed 225 kg/day and drink 200 litres of water/day. Locomotion – Asian Elephants walk - 4 to 6 Km/Hr; 21 Km/Day and can Run - 25 Km/Hr. African Elephants Walk - 6 to 8 Km/Hr; 28 Km/Day and Run - 40 Km/Hr. Both Asian and African Elephants can Swim - 2 Km/Hr; Afloat - 6 Hrs; and continuously Swim a distance of 48 Km.
