2200 STarTrek III Search for Spock 259

Todays 2200 Torn from the troubles of Genesis, Kirk and crew head home a little desolate, from what happened there. Meanwhile Genesis and all to what it entails has been noticed by Commander Kruge of the Klingon Empire. He seeing a weapon out of what happened and something he can use. Back at Starfleet the welcome isn’t quite what Kirk expected, almost a shaming stance from the uppers at the federation. And to Kirk the loss of Spock almost ignored, his request to take the Enterprise back to Genesis also refused. A visitation from Sarek though leaves Kirk baffled if Spock left a Katra and it wasn’t him, then who could it be. McCoy though is having delusional moments from the Katra and when he tries to get a spaceflight to Genesis in a bar, and promptly arrested. Things aren’t so good for the venerable crew. With Mccoy rescued and the crew working together a certain brand new Excelcior gets disarmed and Kirk and crew head back to Genesis. Over there though, the Science crew of the Grissom headed by Saavik and David are exploring Genesis. They soon find a vastly ageing planet and hear cries from a young Vulcan boy. As they try to contact the Grissom, the Grissom gets attacked and destroyed by Kruge in his Bird of Prey. Running from the Klingons the only thing Saavik, David and the boy can do, but the young Vulcan is ageing fast. Kruge attacks though and kills David. With Kirk now approaching Genesis he notices a warp in the field close to the planet, and promptly fires two torpedoes at the bird of prey. However, in doing so hes overloaded Mr Scotts automation centre, and the Enterprise is one dead duck. Kirk though is clever and offers his ship for the hostages. Setting the autodestruct as he does, trapping most of Kruges crew on his ship. It blows kirk though ends on the planet, he and crew safe for now. Seeing his son he mourns David, and then figures out a way to get Kruge to beam down. Rescuing his crew, he fights Kruge and takes him down, saying ‘ i have had enough of you’ kicking him into the fiery innards of Genesis. With one last look at the boiling atmosphere he beams up and takes charge of the Bird of Prey. With a swoop into Vulcan he lets the Vulcans take back the body of Spock and his mind residing in Mccoy. Though a mystical transference and sequence both get reunited and the adventure as it were, continues..... The music by James Horner just shows his emotional touches on the strings as his main theme powers home, soft echoes of woodwind herald the ships passage to camera and Kirks feelings of loss. A new Klingon theme percussive heralds Kruges arrival and we turn on that to a proud brassy statement for the Enterprises glorious arrival at Starfleet. The crew outwitting Starfleet though is escapist fun all its own, slow tones for Uhura in an office, build to greater urgency on brass as the enterprise makes its move to the doors. Part of the main theme used as it heads away, building forcefully more on percussive moments, as we build on whirling strings to warp. Heavy percussion for the exelcior ramp up and slow strings as it fails. The attack on the bird of prey give us yet more percussive moments of Horner yet tinged with bittersweet strings as the Enterprise dives to its doom. One of my most favourite bits though comes as the Bird of Prey lands at Vulcan, as Horner powers out the strings to a stunning arrangement of beauty. Slow percussive hits and horns now make sway for the Katra sequence, coupled with echoey drums. It all swoons up with the Trek theme and then Horner bringing in his own, stirringly so, and into the main theme for the end credits once more. It is of course Star Trek III The Search for Spock. Music (C) James Horner and the orchestra who played of course. Label Intrada, and (C) RCT 2022 for seq and images.
