A Time in Film: 1917-1918
Not the two most memorable years in film, and that could be because WWI was in the way and also because many films were destroyed during that time. The two main highlights were “A Man There Was” and “The Outlaw and His Wife”, which were written, directed and acted in by Victor Sjöström. Others i’d recommend: 1917 - Easy Street, Il Fauno, Mater Dolorosa (cinematography!), The Dying Swan, The Immigrant 1918 - A Dog’s Life (cuteness overload!), A Trip to Mars, Hearts of the World, Les Enfants de France pendant la guerre, The Rose of Rhodesia (South Africa!). 1917 is also the last appearance by French and Russian film pioneers Segundo de Chomón and Yevgeni Bauer. Chomón planned on making a comeback as director when he died in 1929 of a heart attack. Bauer died during production of his final film due to a set injury and pneumonia.
