Apple Announces Driver’s License Inclusion in the US for iPhones
Residents in the first U.S. states will be able to link their driver's license or state ID to the Wallet app on the iPhone and Apple Watch, according to Apple. According to Apple, Arizona and Georgia will be the first states to implement the function, followed by Connecticut, Iowa, Kentucky, Maryland, Oklahoma, and Utah. Customers will be able to produce their mobile driver's license or state ID in the Wallet app for the first time at select TSA security checkpoints in participating U.S. airports, according to Apple. Participating states and the TSA will disclose further details about when and where mobile driver's licenses and IDs will be accepted at a later date. Apple's Wallet software will now allow users to upload a driver's license or state ID. At a TSA checkpoint, users will be able to tap their iPhone or Apple Watch on an identity reader without of taking out their paper card. Customers will be required to take a selfie of themselves, which will be securely sent to the issuing state for verification. Customers will see a prompt on their iPhone or Apple Watch when they tap their device on an identification scanner, which will display the specific information sought by the TSA. According to Apple, the requested identity information is only released from their device once they have authorized it with Face ID or Touch ID. To produce their ID, users do not need to open, show, or hand over their device to a TSA security officer, according to the business. Apple claims that its mobile ID solution complies with ISO 18013-5, which establishes clear privacy requirements for delivering an ID via a mobile device.
