Esna Pottery in Australian Museums

Created by - Holly Millward (https://linktr.ee/Hollymmillward) The Esna Pottery Research project was completed under the Macquarie University History Museum in 2020. The project investigated the pottery sent to Australia by archaeologist John Garstang from the 1905-06 excavations of Esna in Egypt. The 76 vessels from the Queensland and Australian Sydney museums were never properly labelled or detailed when sent over and have never been studied before in Australia. For this reason, during the project, there was a need to correct the records, add new findings as well as link objects to similar tomb numbers, inventories and pottery types. Overall helping the research and understanding of Esna during the Middle Kingdom. Was Presented on the 2nd of September 2021 at the UMAC-UNIVERSEUM 2021 'New Opportunities & New Challenges in Times of COVID-19' Conference. http://umac.icom.museum/resources/archive/past-annual-conferences/ https://twitter.com/hollymmillward/status/1433962819511197701 https://twitter.com/umac_icom/status/1433421539836186633 Esna Journal Article with all the findings will be released in the future - 2022 UMAC Futures Q&A on Youtube - https://youtu.be/oCF6nKJyje4 Timestamps: 00:00 - Beginning 00:01 - Macquarie University History Museum Tour & Information 01:15 - Esna Pottery Research Project 3 main elements & historical background 01:33 - John Garstang Esna Excavation 02:36 - Dorothy Downes Esna Book 02:54 - The Australian and Queensland Museums 03:06 - Main Project tasks 03:30 - The Project Findings 04:14 - Project Importance and Skills Used 06:03 - Summary / Reflection 06:56 - Credits and References Organisation: Macquarie University History Museum https://www.mq.edu.au/faculty-of-arts/departments-and-schools/macquarie-university-history-museum PACE Supervisor: Museum Director Prof. Martin Bommas https://researchers.mq.edu.au/en/persons/martin-bommas Museum Coordinators: Abbie Hartman https://researchers.mq.edu.au/en/persons/abbie-hartman Georgia Barker https://researchers.mq.edu.au/en/persons/georgia-barker Images & Videos Used: Macquarie University Website & Youtube, November 2020.
