John Fahey - In Christ There Is No East or West - fingerstyle guitar cover Leo Kottke

John Fahey originally arranged the hymn and poem "In Christ There Is No East or West" for acoustic guitar and published it in 1959 on his album - Blind Joe Death. It has been played and recorded by many acoustic guitar players over the years. "In Christ There Is No East or West”is a staple amongst fingerstyle guitar players and is a considered by many as a must learn. The most notable cover and arrangement is played by Leo Kottke and first appeared on his Album Greenhouse in 1972. His version has become widely known and maybe as popular as the original. The Poem this is based on was originally Written by - William Arthur Dunkerly in the year 1908. He was asked to write this hymn to be included in a missionary exhibition presented by the London Missionary Society in 1908. Viewed by over a quarter million people, the presentation was called, “The Pageant of Darkness and Light”. Afterward, when he couldn’t find a publisher for this poem, he published it himself, including it in a book called Bees in Amber, which sold 286,000 copies!
