How to climb Via Cinquantenario GAM (6b) in the Italian Dolomites
Multi-pitch climbing routes in the Dolomites? Arrampicata della Dolomiti? If you are looking for inspiration on what multi-pitch rock climbing routes to climb in the Italian Dolomites, then you should watch this climbing video! In this rock climbing video I will introduce Via Cinquantenario GAM – an impressive 17 pitches, 540 meters, grade 6b sport climbing multi-pitch on the magnificent Sas Ciampac in Val Gardena in the Italian Dolomites. This is a super-classic in the Italian Dolomites and a route that you should definitely give a go! However, I have a few very important remarks about this route – but I will come back to that later in this rock climbing video. Via Cinquantenario GAM is a great day of fun. We simply don’t have time to look into all 17 pitches, but I will highlight just a few! According to the Rockfax guidebook to the Italian Dolomites, Via Cinquantenario GAM is considered as a sport multi-pitch. This is true in the sense that the 6a and 6b pitches are solidly bolted, but on the easi-er pitches the distance between the bolts are quite long, so you should bring a small rack of cams. But all belay stations are equipped with bolts too, but only a few have bail biners attached, so if you reckon there is a chance you have to bail consider bringing a handful of maillons! Via Cinquantenario GAM starts pretty hard! The first four pitches are 6b, 6a, 6a and 6b! So, you will soon discover whether you are fit for a climb like this! The lower section of Via Cinquantenario GAM tend to be pretty loose and the rock is dominantly not of a very good quality. After the 9th pitch Via Cinquantenario GAM is a pretty straightforward multi-pitch rock climbing route, however you still need to focus as the number of bolts decrease significantly! The Rockfax guidebook says Via Cinquantenario GAM takes 4-6 hours – this is unreal-istic even if you are a good, skillful climber. We climbed in a team of three and climbed for approximately 10 hours. We were not particularly slow, and we all climb harder than 6b, so Via Cinquantenario GAM was supposed to be a climb within our comfort zone. In terms of gear we brought 12 quick draws and our standard sport climbing multi-pitch anchor gear. I wouldn’t really call this a sport climbing multi-pitch – it is mixed! You need to bring a small rack to stay safe and you need to keep an eye on the time you spend climbing this beast! When you are ready to descent you simply just top out at the summit of Sas Ciampac!
