5 Reasons NOT to get the iPhone X
Do you have iPhone X FOMO? Are you’re staring at your slightly older iPhone and thinking that it’s time to upgrade? So the question is: Do you upgrade to the X? or should you upgrade to the 8? I’ve been using the iPhone X for a few days and here’s 5 reasons why I thought of to help you decide between the iPhone 8 and iPhone X. Is the Apple iPhone X on Amazon yet? Amazon US: http://mreh.ca/2yCqSjD Amazon CA: http://mreh.ca/2yEmd0Q Amazon UK: http://mreh.ca/2yDCDGP Amazon DE: http://mreh.ca/2yEtldH Or get it on eBay: http://mreh.ca/2yEiUXC Top 5 Reasons NOT to get the iPhone X #5 Cost The cheapest iPhone X is going to cost you $999 USD to buy outright. The iPhone X is $200 more than the iPhone 8 Plus and $300 more than the iPhone 8. So the price difference is significant. For $999, you could by a brand new MacBook Air. And let’s be honest, you’d probably be more productive with an actual laptop than the iPhone X. So the question to ask yourself is: What more am I getting for the extra $300 dollars? What will I be able to do on the iPhone X that I can’t do with an iPhone 8 or 8 Plus? or 7 for that matter? #4 It’s just another iPhone It’s nothing magical. If you’re not a techie, all these new, fringe features isn’t going to matter to you. Don’t get sucked into the marketing fluff. A good tool is actually on Apple’s website where you can compare the different models side by side. One of the things I felt when I unboxed the iPhone X was just how familiar it was. It didn’t feel any different. There was nothing special about it because it’s just another iteration of the iPhone. I’ve been using it for a few days and nothing has been life changing about it. Unlike the AirPods which has changed how I listen to music between all my devices. #3 FaceID Now why is FaceID a reason NOT to get the iPhone X? Shouldn’t it be a big reason? It is one of the stand out features of the iPhone X isn’t it? Don’t get me wrong, I like the feature but if I’m looking at logically, it’s just an evolution of TouchID. And the job of TouchID and FaceID is to secure your phone, your passwords and Apple Pay. Don’t let this feature be a driving factor for why want to get the iPhone X. As cool as it looks, is it worth spending an extra $300 dollars for it? #2 iOS isn’t optimized for the iPhone X (deadspace, screen isn’t actually bigger) This is the main reason I wouldn’t get an iPhone X if I wasn’t reviewing products. Why? Because the apps don’t look great with the iPhone X. The OLED screen looks amazing when placed side by side against an iPhone 8 but look at all the empty space at the bottom of the Facebook app. Lots of dead space and in an era where UI reigns supreme, that deadspace seems like a fatal flaw. Look at Safari on the iPhone X. The bottom again has a ton of deadspace. Now the top of the iPhone X doesn’t bother me as much because the extra space of the screen has the time, cell strength, wifi and battery widgets filling in the space. But you don’t have that for the bottom of the iPhone X and now that I’ve noticed it, it standouts even more than the black strip with the FaceID camera. But here’s the thing that Apple really needs to fix on the iPhone X. The 5.8 inch screen looks bigger than the iPhone 8 Plus’s 5.5 inch screen on paper BUT games will be played on a screen smaller than the regular iPhone 8’s screen. Let that sink in, in order for games to show up properly on the iPhone X, Apple has to scale it down. Now it’s not like it would take up the screen that’s not curved, Apple has to fit the virtual home button as well. Which is why gaming on the iPhone X is going to suck. And why I say iOS isn’t optimized for the iPhone X. Because I have the choice, the iPhone 8 Plus is still going to be my goto iPhone for gaming. #1 Learn how to use an iPhone again There is a bit of a learning curve for the iPhone X.
