Blind Therizinosaurus: The Most Mysterious Dinosaur of All Time
Therizinosaurus cheloniformis is the onlyknown species of the extinct genus Therizinosaurus ( " scythe lizard ") of therizinosaurid coelurosaurian dinosaur , which lived in the late Cretaceous period , approximately 70 to 66 million years ago, in the Maastrichtian , in what is now Asia . It is one of the largest and most representative of the therizinosaur group . Its fossils were discovered in Mongolia and it was originally thought to be a turtle-like species, hence its species name, T. cheloniformis . Known only for a handful of bones, including gigantic clawed hands, from which her name comes. The first remains of Therizinosaurus were found in 1948 by a Mongolian field expedition in the Gobi desert and later described by Evgeny Maleev in 1954. The genus is only known from a few bones, including giant handnails, bones of claws, for which it is named, and additional finds comprising forelimb and hindlimb elements that were discovered during the 1960s to 1980s. Therizinosaurus was a colossal therizinosaurid that could grow up to 13 meters long and 4 to 5 meters tall, and possibly weigh more than 5 tons. Like other therizinosaurids, it would have been a tall , long-necked, slow-moving browser equipped with a rhamphotheca, horny beak, and a broad torso for processing food. Its forelimbs were particularly robust, and it had three claw-bearing toes that, unlike other relatives, were very stiff, elongated, and only had significant curvatures at the tips. TherizinosaurusIt had the longest known hand claws of any land animal, reaching more than 50 centimeters in length. Their hind legs ended in four functional weight-bearing toes unlike other theropod groups in which the first toe was reduced to a vestigial and resembled those of unrelated sauropodomorphs . https://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Therizinosaurus #blindtherizinosaurus #therizinosaurus #jurassicworldevolution2
