LCUUF 2021-08-08 Can Cities Save Us?
By Rev. Matt Alspaugh Right now, about 5% of the earth’s land surface is consumed by cities, which are where a little over half of the world’s people live. The UN predicts that by 2050, over two-thirds of people will live in cities, that is to say, nearly 7 billion of almost 10 billion total people will live in cities, and they may consume 10% of land area. For many, this is a dystopian scenario, of pollution, traffic, and crime. But the world’s people think differently, and are moving from farms to cities. I think the migration of people to cities is a hopeful thing. Cities may be the gateway to a stabilized world population living sustainably in a world alongside nature. We explore how this might be possible.
