NBA draft | 2000-2019 draftees analysis | Lucky & Unlucky teams

The NBA draft is an annual event dating back to 1947 in which the teams from the NBA can draft players who are eligible and wish to join the league. The draft usually takes place near the end of June, during the NBA offseason. Since 1989, the draft has consisted of two rounds. Sixty players are selected in each draft. Unsurprisingly, second-rounders do not often have long successful careers in the Association. We used the estimated win shares for every pick from 2000 to 2019, a total of 20 years of statistics. “Win shares” is a performance indicator of a player. We tried to find out which teams were the luckiest and had most active second-round draft picks. At the same time, let's take a look at which unlucky teams often chose regrettable first-round draftees. We drew the statistics into a graph. The X axis is the order of the draft. There are two rounds, each with 30 players and 60 players in total. Y axis is win shares per 48 minutes, an estimate of the number of wins contributed by a player per 48 minutes. According to basketball reference.com, league average is approximately 0.1. We used the 30th place in the draft and win shares per 48 minutes 0.1. These two lines are drawn vertically into four quadrants. The first quadrant is the first round of the draft, and has better performance, that is, win shares greater than 0.1. The second quadrant is the first round of the draft, but the performance is not as expected. The third quadrant is the second round of the draft, which is below average. The fourth quadrant is the second round of the draft, but the performance exceeded expectations. Data source: Basketball reference.com
