Ka Shad Nongkrem: The Thanksgiving Festival of Hima Khyrim

Ka Leh Niam Bad Shad Ai Nguh Hima Khyrim, or more popularly referred to as Ka Pom-Blang Nongkrem festival is a 5 day thanksgiving celebration held during the months of October or November. The festival is celebrated to please the all powerful goddess Ka Blei Synshar for a bumper harvest and well being of he people. The highlights of the festival are Ka Pomblang and Ka Shad Nohkjat held on the Market days of Ïewduh (3rd Day) and Lyngka (4th Day) respectively. On the 4th Day of the celebration the crowd also participates in the dance. Women dress up in fine khasi traditional attire with gold or silver crowns having beautiful yellow flowers on them. Male dancers wear a traditional waist coat (jymphong), a golden turban and a silk dhoti. Men and women move in circles with women forming the inner circle. The men once again take up the posture of protectors of women and dance with rigor with sword in one hand and yak-hair whisk in another.
