Describing the undercoat that goes on before the paint - 1967 Maserati Ghibli

One of the decisions in a restoration like this is undercoat - follow the factory exactly? Use better materials? Don't use any undercoat at all? We elect to follow the factory's lead, but use modern materials that won't run and melt, and will look better for many years.
