Julian Burnside AO QC | 2016 Renate Kamener Scholarship Oration
The Seventh Renate Kamener Oration and was held on Sunday 11th September in the Academic Centre of Ormond College. The Oration was initiated by the Kamener family in honour of their mother Renate Kamener who had a passion for peace in our world and worked with many community groups in support of that goal. Julian Burnside AO QC is an Australian barrister who practises principally in commercial litigation, trade practices and administrative law. He is also a human rights and refugee advocate, and author. In this oration Julian spoke on ‘Is Islamophobia the new anti-Semitism?’ The Oration supports a scholarship, established by Bob, Larry and Marty Kamener and the Australian Jewish Democratic Society, for an Indigenous student to come to Ormond. This year’s recipient, Todd Fernando, spoke at the Oration about what the Renate Kamener Indigenous Scholarship meant to him.
