A. Schönberg/ Phantasy for Violin and Piano opus 47 - Vera Beths & Theo Bruins (live 1990)
Vera Beths (violin) and Theo Bruins (piano) perform Phantasy for violin and piano, opus 47, composed by Arnold Schönberg. This unique recording was made in the Vpro radio studio in Hilversum on March 4, 1990. Violinist Vera Beths has always surrounded herself with the best musicians, together with Reinbert de Leeuw, for example, she formed a close duo for years. That she came to Hilversum that morning with pianist Theo Bruins (1929-1993) to play Arnold Schönberg's Fantasia opus 47 was a great gift. Theo Bruins was a household name, but not someone who liked to make a commercial for himself. Pianist Theo Bruins (1929-1993) smoked pipe, which made him a thinker. He was a musician looking for intellectual challenges. That is why he got along so well with Beethoven and Debussy, that is why he committed himself to living composers and fellow countrymen like Tristan Keuris, Rudolf Escher, Kees van Baaren and Peter Schat. He made his debut as a pianist in 1964 with the 2nd piano concerto by Bela Bartok and Pierre Boulez conducted the orchestra. As a pianist, he earned a lot of admiration and traveled the world to give concerts. He was described by friends as a humble musician with a great sense of responsibility who was not carried away by emotions. Theo Bruins' motto was therefore: “I just do my job”. With his analytical mind he was able to fillet new works like no other, some of them written especially for him. That was also because he was a composer himself and he was able to look behind the notes like no other. When he received the message that he was seriously ill, he withdrew from public life and devoted himself to his great love, composing. His last piece was "Syncope" a composition for harpsichord.
