Global Warming and Climate Change in the 21st Century

Presented by Mike Adler Geologists of Jackson Hole This talk is an update on a talk I gave first in 2014 at the time when the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) issued their comprehensive fifth assessment report on the climate. The IPCC is an organization of governments that are members of the United Nations or WMO (World Meteorological Organization). Thousands of people from all over the world contribute to the work of the IPCC. The first part of the sixth assessment report is now completed, “Climate Change 2021, The Physical Science Basis”. While the full report is over 1300 pages, I will summarize it as well as bring in information from other sources. The talk will start reviewing what the greenhouse effect is and that Earth would not be inhabitable without it. The Earth's climate history over the last 2000 years will be reviewed showing that we are in the warmest multi-century period in 100,000 years. During the talk four years ago it appeared that the Earth’s warming might be slowing but the intervening data shows that the warming rate in the last ten years is the highest in the last 2000 years. Data will then be presented that shows that there is an almost linear relationship between emitted CO2 and global temperature rise. Data and projections will be presented on the effect of continued greenhouse emissions on global temperature, the severity of extreme weather events, continued loss of glaciers and sea ice, ocean temperature, sea-level rise, and acidity. Finally, because of my interest in astronomy, a brief relationship between the four inner planet’s
